President's Update: January 2012
Dear Friend of Indiana University,
As we enter a new year and begin a new semester, I want to share with you some exciting recent news that highlights the extraordinary support IU is receiving from alumni and friends as we continue to build on our legacy as one of America’s great public universities.
Since my last update, the university has received two of the most significant gifts in its history, both of which will have a transformational impact on two of our highest-profile schools.
Last December, the IU School of Law at Indianapolis celebrated the remarkable generosity of Robert McKinney, a prominent Indianapolis attorney, business executive, and civic leader. His gift of $24 million, combined with a $7.5 million match through the IUPUI IMPACT fundraising campaign, will have a major lasting impact on a law school that has educated many of the state’s leaders.
This gift, which we believe to be one of the largest made in U.S. legal education, will allow the newly rechristened Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law to attract recognized scholars and teachers through the creation of five endowed chairs. It also will serve generations of deserving students through the newly formed McKinney Family Scholarships fund.On a similar scale, the $33 million Lilly Endowment gift to the IU Kelley School of Business in Bloomington provides the final piece to an ambitious $60 million plan to transform the school’s undergraduate facilities. The grant is the largest in the Kelley School’s history and will allow it to significantly expand and renovate the school’s undergraduate building.
When completed, the new undergraduate facilities will allow Kelley students to learn in a technology-rich environment that will provide virtual classroom access to business professionals and companies from across Indiana and around the world. The new undergraduate facility also will contain 20 additional classrooms, allowing the Kelley School, which is consistently ranked among the top 20 business schools in the country, to expand to meet student demand.
The Lilly Endowment’s show of faith in the Kelley School recognizes the vitally important role the school and the university play in driving the economy in Indiana. Beyond that, this latest gift underscores the endowment’s generous legacy of supporting activities at Indiana University that benefit the people of Indiana and around the world.
Today, more than ever, the future growth and development of public universities is inextricably tied to the generosity of alumni and friends. In this regard, few institutions can match Indiana University’s deep reservoir of supporters who constantly amaze us all with their commitment to IU and the state of Indiana.
I speak for everyone across the university in thanking Robert McKinney and the Lilly Endowment for their remarkable generosity and show of faith in the power and promise of this university.
These gifts are the latest examples of the extraordinary support being provided to Indiana University every day by alumni and friends from around the world, without which we would not be able to build on our outstanding legacy of education and research.
As always, thank you for all you do to keep Indiana University strong.
Michael A. McRobbie
