Four IU Graduates are Honored with The Distinguished Alumni Service Award
IU President Michael A. McRobbie presented four Indiana University graduates—including IU's first African-American trustee, a legendary sports broadcaster, a leader in philanthropy, and a respected journalism executive—with IU's Distinguished Alumni Service Award, the university's highest award given only to an alumna or alumnus. Nancy Hamblin, national chair of the IU Alumni Association, presided at the presentation ceremony at the Henke Hall of Champions in Bloomington. The Distinguished Alumni Service Award recipients were chosen for service and achievement in their fields of endeavor and significant contributions to community, state or nation. With the addition of these recipients, IU has honored 314 alumni since the award's inception in 1953

IU formally names the Robert H. McKinney School of Law
IU President Michael A. McRobbie presided over the ceremony that marked the official naming of the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in recognition and honor of Indianapolis attorney, banker, and civic leader, Robert H. McKinney. In December 2011, McKinney made the largest gift ever received by the school and one of the largest in legal education. His gift of $24 million, along with matching funds committed through the IUPUI IMPACT fundraising campaign, brings the total value of the gift to $31.5 million.

Indiana University celebrates the lives of Vincent and Elinor Ostrom
The Indiana University community came together to celebrate the lives of Vincent and Elinor Ostrom, Indiana University faculty members who were world renowned for their original and influential research on resource management and democratic governance. Elinor Ostrom, Distinguished Professor and Arthur F. Bentley Professor of Political Science and the only woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, died June 12. Vincent Ostrom, Arthur F. Bentley Professor Emeritus of Political Science, died June 29.

McRobbie delivers his 2012 State of the University address
IU President Michael A. McRobbie detailed the major progress IU has made over the past year in advancing its teaching, research and public service missions, while also unveiling a significant new initiative aimed at lowering the cost and reducing the time it takes to earn an IU degree, at his annual State of the University address.

HPER renamed IU School of Public Health-Bloomington
Indiana University Bloomington's venerable School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation received a new name, IU School of Public Health-Bloomington, and a reinvigorated mission to advance novel, nontraditional approaches to addressing the state's public health needs. University and school dignitaries, administrators, faculty and staff gathered in the Tony A. Mobley Auditorium at IU Bloomington to celebrate the formal renaming of the school, an important milestone in the IU Public Health Initiative, launched in 2009 to address critical health needs throughout Indiana.

School of Public Health at IUPUI named for Fairbanks in honor of $20 million gift
The new school school of public health at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis was formally named the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health. In a ceremony, IU recognized the transformative and remarkably generous $20 million gift from the Richard M. Fairbanks Foundation to help establish the school.

IU South Bend School of Business and Economics named in honor of Judd Leighton
Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie announced the naming of the Indiana University South Bend School of Business and Economics in honor of former South Bend businessman, banker, civic leader and philanthropist Judd Leighton. The school will be known as the Judd Leighton School of Business and Economics in recognition of the largest single donor gift in the history of IU South Bend.

2012 Freshman Induction Ceremony marks the start of students’ IU career
The Freshman Induction Ceremony has been an Indiana University tradition for more than 70 years. Participants heard from IU President Michael A. McRobbie and Provost Lauren Robel, and they learned the words to "Hail to Old IU," the official alma mater song.

Ground is broken for the new IUPUI Neurosciences Research Center
Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels joined leaders of Indiana University and Indiana University Health to recognize the start of construction that will result in a new center for research and clinical excellence in the neurosciences in Indianapolis. During the ceremony, President Michael A. McRobbie bestowed an honorary doctor of science degree upon Ferid Murad, M.D., Ph.D., an Indiana native who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1998.

2012 IU Bloomington undergraduate commencement

IU, IU Health aim for ‘the next level’
Indiana University Health and the Indiana University School of Medicine announced they will invest $150 million over five years in a new research collaboration, the Strategic Research Initiative, that will enhance the institutions’ joint capabilities in fundamental scientific investigation, translational research and clinical trials that will result in innovative treatments for disease. IU President Michael A. McRobbie and IU Health Chief Executive Officer Dan Evans spoke about the collaboration in an extended interview.

Top Chinese finance official delivers lecture at IUPUI, receives honorary degree
Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie conferred an honorary doctorate of humane letters upon Yi Gang, who served as assistant professor and associate professor of economics at IUPUI from 1986 to 1994. The Chinese official, who serves as deputy governor of the People's Bank of China and manages China’s $2.3 trillion of foreign currency reserves presented a lecture, “China's Economy—Path of RMB Exchange Rate Converging to Equilibrium.”

2012 Honors Convocation
Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie, along with Interim Provost and Executive Vice President Lauren Robel, presided over the 2012 Bloomington Honors Convocation in the IU Auditorium. They saluted IU Bloomington Founders Scholars, high-achieving students who have earned cumulative GPAs of 3.8 or higher, and other outstanding undergraduates who have distinguished themselves in scholarship, leadership, and service.

Indiana University, IU Health contribute $11.5 billion annually to state economy
Indiana University and Indiana University Health generated a combined economic impact of at least $11.5 billion for the state of Indiana and sustained 100,000 jobs during the 2010-11 fiscal year, according to the results of an economic impact study released today, Feb. 16. IU President Michael A. McRobbie unveiled the results at a press conference on the IUPUI campus of Indiana University this afternoon.

David Baker’s 80th Birthday Celebration
The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music celebrated Distinguished Professor David N. Baker’s 80th Birthday in style at the Musical Arts Center. During the concert, Baker received the President’s Medal for Excellence from IU President Michael A. McRobbie.
